This weekends higher league opponents currently find themselves tucked away in mid table in The Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Football League, and have progressed beyond this stage of the competition three times in the last four seasons.
By contrast, it is fifteen years since The Mullets progressed to the 2nd Round of the competition, and the manager knows all too well how important the competition is to the club not only from a sporting – but also from a financial perspective.
“The Vase is always a fantastic competition to be part of, and it has been a long time since the club progressed beyond round one – and the lads are determined to change that tomorrow.”
“With the winning team receiving £825 in prize money, it helps the club off the pitch as we look to continue the excellent work the Chairman and committee have done this season.”
“It is not all about the money – it is a game of football, and regardless if there is zero money on the table or thousands, we want to win every game.”
“The good thing about this group of players is that they thrive on being the underdogs – we usually turn up when our backs are against the wall. This weekend will be no exception. We are ready.”
“The Sweeney” are going through a run of consistent form – with two wins, two draws and two losses over their last six league games, and will be looking to make home advantage count in front of what promises to be a decent crowd at The Spectrum Football Ground.
“Guildford are a good side and will be looking to put us on the back foot early – our job is to make sure that does not happen. We need to start fast, show them we are there to compete and ease ourselves into the game plan.”
“We have been doing some good work on set plays this week, and the lads really are chomping at the bit to get out on the pitch. We want to do the club proud.”
“Last week was a good reaction from the boys on the back of four games without a win.”
“There were some brilliant individual performances, but what pleased me more was the passion that we showed as a team.”
“Cal Stobart came in and was brilliant, but the highlight for me was Herbie Evans – it looked he had been playing with Billy Ground in that middle for years, they had such a good understanding.”
With travelling Mullet’s supporters filling a coach, this weekend promises to be an exciting one, and the manager is delighted his team will have a healthy backing from the stands
“Genuinely, I am humbled by the support the lads and myself receive from the supporter’s week in week out.”
“The gates are increasing week on week, and it is humbling how many people care about this football club.”
“The fact that we are taking a full coach of supporters and officials to the game – as well as others who I know are commuting in cars and trains, is a big lift for the lads, and we hope to repay that faith with a positive result.”
Come and support The Mullets on the road this weekend and we look to progress into the 2nd Round of the FA Vase away at Guildford City – Guildford Spectrum, Parkway, Guildford GU1 1UP – 3PM KO
