Newly-Promoted Haywards Heath Town put down a marker on the opening weekend of the SCFL season with a commanding 5-0 home victory against Arundel at Hanbury Park Stadium.
Last season's Division One league and cup double winners opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Tom Graves. The central defender showed a great touch to control Jamie Weston's ball into the box, before a lovely turn and shot to the keeper's left of which any striker would have been proud of.
Heath's second came after 42 minutes. Nathan Cooper hooked the ball up in the air to the back post with striker Max Miller on hand to head the ball home into the opposite corner to send the hosts in with a 2-0 lead at half-time.
It was then the turn of last week's F.A Cup hero Callum Saunders to get in on the action. The winger won two penalties in the final 15 minutes of the game, dispatching both himself to take his season's tally of goals to 4.
The first came in the 76 minute when he was fouled just inside the box by Arundel's left-back Ash Hunter. The second came 5 minutes from time as Saunders rushed to get on the end of substitute Alfie Rogers' long ball. There was a collision with goalkeeper James Fernandes, for which match referee Robert King didn't hesitate in pointing to the spot. Saunders rifled the ball low into the bottom corner with another well-taken penalty to bring up Heath's fifth goal of the afternoon and that's how it finished.
Final Score: Haywards Heath 5 - 0 Arundel.
Man Of The Match:
Kane Louis. Heath's new number 10 put in a very classy performance. He was a constant threat all afternoon and can count himself unlucky not to have got his name on the score sheet. He will be vital in what the team could go on to achieve this season.
